Finishes

Stainless steel sheet is available in a variety of surface finishes.  The surface finish is not only concerned with the physical appearance of the sheet; it also affects the material's sensitivity to corrosion and its cleaning ability.  This is of particular significance to the food and health sector industries, arguably making the surface finish section process almost as important as selecting the appropriate grade.

Initially all sheet and plate is hot rolled.  This equates to a relatively matt grey and coarse appearance.  Generally speaking, the thicker the plate, the coarser the surface.  After this, there two main types of polishing:

  1. grained or satin; and
  2. brightened or mirrored.

For guidance purposes:

The sheet begins with an initial rolling step and is then annealed and pickled. It has a matt grey and coarse appearance.

Mostly associated with industrial equipment and production of pipes/tubes.

2B is the standard basic finish on sheets up to 3mm thick and can be supplied on sheets up to 6mm thick. It has a smoother finish than hot rolled, due to a change in the rolling process, and has a dull, silky appearance.

It is often used in the manufacture of food processing equipment (eg: commercial kitchens)

Bright Annealed (BA) stainless steel sheet is cold rolled and annealed but not pickled. Annealing the sheet is the primary purpose of this process. Whilst it usually results in a brighter finish, the brightness is incidental to the process and is not guaranteed. BA sheet is often found in household appliances such as dish washers and washing machines

Dull Polished

Polishing leaves a uniformed grain running down the length of the product. It is achieved by passing the sheet through an abrasive belt to give it a consistent and an appealing finish and is often found in commercial kitchens and lifts. Depending on the grade of belt used, finishes can be from a coarse 80-grit up to 320-grit. A smooth textured finish can also be produced, introducing silicon in to the process (240s), and a popular alternative to standard dull polished sheet is our proprietary LeenSheen polish.

Bright Polished

Produced with mops and compounds, as opposed to abraisive media. Provides reflectivity, ranging from bright-buffed to mirror-polished finishes. Often associated with architectural industries.

available off the shelf up to and including 4mm thick

Circle Polished

A special finish of overlapped and crossed circular patterns that can be varied to suit customer application. Often associated with catering and architectural industries.

available off the shelf in 0.7mm and 0.9mm thick

LeenSheen

A proprietary LeenGate product that delivers long, shallow grains and a finer, smoother texture to the sheet. LeenSheen is a popular and superior alternative to dull polish which lends itself to applications where hygiene and ease of cleaning are important, for example: restaurants and canteens; kitchen equipment and food preparation areas; hospital equipment.
